Updated
Separate common China visa documents from category-specific and applicant-specific evidence for tourism, business, study and family visits.
A China visa file is not built from one universal checklist. Every applicant needs a core identity and application set, but the evidence for tourism, commercial travel, study or a family visit is different. Personal circumstances—including previous nationality, passport history and where the applicant is legally staying—can add further requirements.
Build the checklist in three layers
- Common preparation: passport, application information and photograph.
- Category evidence: documents that prove the genuine purpose of the trip.
- Applicant-specific evidence: material required because of nationality, residence, passport history or another individual circumstance.
Use the current checklist published by the official center handling the application. Requirements and upload/submission steps can change, and a document used for a previous visa may no longer be sufficient.
China visa document comparison

| Online application information and required confirmation/printout | Common | All applicants | Names, passport number, travel purpose, dates and declarations match the evidence. |
| Recent photograph | Common | All applicants | Current digital and printed-photo specifications; see the photo requirements guide. |

Common application preparation
For conditional history requirements and differences between older booklets and former-nationality evidence, see previous Chinese visas and old passports.
Passport
Current New Delhi category pages commonly call for an original passport with at least six months' remaining validity, sufficient blank visa pages and relevant copies. They also refer to expired passports from the preceding five years. Exact passport requirements can depend on the category and requested visa validity, so check the applicable live page rather than using six months as the only test.
Application form and photograph
Complete the current online application accurately, upload the requested material and follow the portal instructions for printing and signing. The identity, occupation, travel history, purpose and host information should match the supporting file. A technically accepted upload is not a visa decision.
Previous passport, nationality and legal-stay evidence
Previous Chinese passport or visa material may be required in circumstances described by the official checklist, particularly for a person who previously held Chinese nationality or has renewed a passport containing no earlier Chinese visa. Applicants who are not applying in their country of citizenship may need proof of lawful stay, residence, work or study status. These are conditional requirements, not universal add-ons for every Indian citizen.
Documents by travel purpose
Tourist travel
Tourism evidence may include a genuine itinerary, transport/accommodation material or an applicable tourism invitation, plus current applicant-specific evidence. Do not create bookings solely to make the file look complete or assume every booking must be non-refundable. Use the tourist preparation guide for context.
Business, supplier and trade-fair travel
Commercial applications require evidence of the business activity. Current New Delhi M-category guidance lists documents issued by a Chinese trade partner or a trade-fair invitation and publishes detailed invitation-content expectations. Company and inviter documents currently requested must also be checked. The business guide explains the category, while the invitation consistency guide focuses on matching the four sides of the business record.
Canton Fair or exhibition participation remains commercial context rather than a separate universal checklist. See the existing Canton Fair or exhibition assistance pages where relevant.
Study
Student evidence depends on the applicable X category and study duration. Admission material, institution details and any currently required study form should match the passport and application. Confirm the documents directly with the institution and current official checklist; the student visa guide explains the preparation framework.
Family visit
Family-related applications are not one visa type. Q and S categories differ according to the inviter's status, relationship context and intended duration. Invitation, inviter identity/status and relationship evidence must fit the selected category. Start with the family visit documents guide and the site's family visit assistance page.
Before sending original documents
Private document review can often begin with clear digital copies. First confirm which physical or original documents are genuinely required, when they become relevant and where they must go. If originals are needed for private coordination, an outstation applicant may use a tracked courier such as Blue Dart, DTDC or another suitable provider; these are examples, not partners.
- Complete an initial digital review where appropriate.
- Confirm the exact originals and receiving instructions.
- Use secure packaging and retain an inventory/copies.
- Choose tracking if private document dispatch is appropriate.
- Confirm receipt.
- Follow official submission or personal-appearance instructions separately.
Courier is not required for every applicant and cannot replace an official attendance, biometric, interview or submission requirement.
Final file check
- Every name and passport number matches.
- The visa category describes the real main purpose.
- Dates and places agree across the form, invitation and itinerary.
- Inviter, institution or company details are current and readable.
- Conditional documents are included only where applicable.
- No original is dispatched before its need is confirmed.
