Current China visa photograph requirements for Indian applicants, including verified print and digital dimensions, pose, background and quality checks.
A China visa photograph can fail the upload or document-acceptance check even when it looks acceptable as an ordinary portrait. Prepare it as an identity photograph: current appearance, exact dimensions, neutral pose, clear facial features and a plain light background. A photo correction is not the same as a visa refusal or a decision on the merits of the application.
Current printed-photo specification
New Delhi's current Visa Application Center FAQ specifies a recent colour photograph measuring 48 mm high × 33 mm wide, taken within the previous six months and reflecting the applicant's current appearance. Current category pages also describe a physical 33 × 48 mm colour photograph with a white background for passport submission.
The detailed official specification places the head width between 15 mm and 22 mm and the head height, measured from chin to crown, between 28 mm and 33 mm. The top of the head should sit approximately 3–5 mm below the upper edge, with at least 7 mm between the chin and the bottom edge.
Digital photograph requirements
The official detailed specification gives a digital-image range of 354–420 pixels wide and 472–560 pixels high. It specifies 24-bit RGB colour, JPEG compression and a usual file-size range of 40–120 KB.
These measurements are upload specifications, not an instruction to stretch a photograph into shape. Resizing that distorts the face or produces visible compression can create another compliance problem. If the current portal presents a different upload instruction or validation message, follow the live portal and applicable center guidance.
Face, head position and expression
- Face the camera directly, with the complete head and face clearly visible and centered.
- Keep both eyes open, the mouth closed and a neutral expression.
- Avoid obvious head tilt or turn. The detailed specification limits left/right head rotation to 20 degrees and up/down tilt to 15 degrees.
- Do not include another person, a hand, toy or other object in the frame.
- Facial features must remain clear and undistorted.
Glasses, headwear and facial visibility
The current New Delhi FAQ states that glasses, hats, headscarves and other accessories are not allowed. Where headwear is required for religious reasons, the whole face must remain visible and uncovered. Because older or non-India detailed specifications sometimes describe limited eyeglass conditions differently, the safer current India-specific instruction is to prepare the photograph without glasses.
Hair or clothing should not obscure the eyes or the outline of the face. Do not digitally reconstruct or reshape facial features to remove an obstruction.
Background, light and image quality
Use a plain white or near-white background without scenery, patterns or a visible border. Lighting should be even: no shadow across the face or behind the head, no red-eye, and no area that is excessively bright or dark. Skin tone should appear natural.
The image should be sharp, clean and free of scratches, stains or folds. Avoid beauty filters, background replacement with rough edges, aggressive smoothing, colour effects and excessive sharpening. Editing should not change the applicant's appearance.
Photo Check Before Upload/Submission
- The photograph was taken within six months and still reflects current appearance.
- Printed image is 33 mm wide × 48 mm high.
- Digital image is within the current official pixel range and accepted JPEG/file-size range.
- Head is centered—not too small, too large, tilted or cropped.
- Eyes are open, mouth closed and expression neutral.
- No glasses or non-religious headwear; religious covering does not obscure the face.
- Background is white or near-white, plain and shadow-free.
- Face is sharp, evenly lit and not over-edited.
- The uploaded image belongs to the applicant named in the form.
- A matching physical photograph is ready if the current submission instruction asks for it.
If the online photo is not accepted
Do not keep compressing or cropping the same unsuitable file until it passes. Return to the original photograph and check dimensions, face size, background, sharpness and file properties. If online review asks for modification, follow the message and resubmit the corrected image. A returned upload or request for a new photograph is a procedural correction; it should not be described as proof that the visa itself has been refused.
