Organise previous Chinese visa pages, old passports and any applicable name-change evidence, while separating general history from former-nationality rules.
Renewing a passport does not erase the history relevant to a later visa application. The useful task is to connect the current identity document with the previous records that apply to your circumstances, without turning a conditional requirement into a universal checklist.
This guide focuses on that record history. Use the main document checklist for the rest of the application.
Separate three different situations
| Situation | Why the history matters | Preparation focus |
|---|---|---|
| An applicant has expired passports | The handling centre may ask for relevant older passport material. | Locate booklets and identify the requested pages without guessing the scope. |
| An applicant has previously held a Chinese visa or visited China | The record may support answers about previous travel or an entry request. | Connect the visa, the passport containing it and the travel information requested. |
| An applicant formerly held Chinese nationality | Specific former-nationality evidence can apply. | Read that conditional checklist section rather than applying it to every Indian applicant. |
The New Delhi general requirements notice asks for passports expired within the preceding five years and relevant copies. The page also contains older procedural wording, so use current case instructions for submission arrangements rather than treating the entire notice as a current process manual.
Keep former-nationality requirements in their proper scope
The New Delhi category checklist places its previous Chinese passport/visa section under a heading for former Chinese citizens who acquired foreign citizenship. It distinguishes a first application from a later application on a renewed foreign passport, and addresses official name-change evidence where names differ.
Read that heading before copying the paragraph into your personal checklist. An Indian citizen who has never held Chinese nationality should not be told that every document in that conditional section is automatically required. Conversely, someone to whom it applies should not overlook it just because their current passport is foreign.
Preserve a clear record chain
As a practical preparation method, label scans so you can distinguish the current passport, each relevant older booklet and any previous Chinese visa. Retain complete, readable copies of requested pages; do not remove information from the original document to make two records appear consistent.
A small index can record which booklet contains which visa and whether a name or passport number changed between applications. This is your organising aid, not a new official form. Keep sensitive records with the people actually handling the application rather than circulating the whole archive unnecessarily.
If you are relying on a previous visit, distinguish a visa being issued from a journey actually taking place. Use your available records to answer the question asked. Do not invent an entry or exit date from memory when the evidence needs checking.
Previous travel does not guarantee repeat entry conditions
The Embassy's India visa FAQ discusses previous Chinese visas and visits when requesting double or multiple entries. Such evidence supports consideration; it does not establish a guaranteed repeat visa or entitlement to the same conditions as before.
Describe the new travel need on its own facts. A previous visa is history, while the new invitation or itinerary explains the intended visit. For a business file, the invitation guide covers the current supporting documents.
If an old record is unavailable or differs
Identify the exact gap: an unavailable booklet, an unreadable scan, a changed name or an uncertain travel date. Tell the handling centre what you do and do not have and ask what evidence they will accept for that circumstance. Do not assume a police report, affidavit or replacement declaration is universally required or sufficient.
Keep any answer with the application records and disclose history accurately. The application guide explains the broader process; this page does not provide lost-passport replacement or visa-transfer rules.
