A current, practical guide to choosing a China visa category, preparing documents, completing the online process and following the applicable submission instructions in India.
Before collecting documents, establish why you are travelling to China. Tourism, commercial travel, study and a family visit do not use one interchangeable checklist. Your travel purpose affects the visa category, the evidence you upload and the documents that may later need to be submitted.

India moved to an online visa-processing system for New Delhi in December 2025. Current New Delhi instructions require applicants to complete the online form, upload materials and wait for online review completion and a confirmation email before taking the passport and requested documents to the Visa Application Center. Mumbai or Kolkata applicants should follow the current instructions published for their applicable center rather than assuming every Delhi step is identical.

China visa application process from India
- Confirm the travel purpose. Write down what you will do in China, who is hosting or funding the trip, intended dates and where you expect to stay. This makes category selection and document review more reliable.
- Check the latest official requirements. Use the Embassy and the applicable Chinese Visa Application Service Center page. Old screenshots, cached checklists and previous applications may no longer reflect the current online procedure.
- Prepare identity and purpose-specific evidence. Check passport validity and blank pages, prepare a compliant recent photograph and collect the evidence relevant to tourism, business, study or family travel.
- Complete the current online application. Create or sign in to the applicable official account, complete every field accurately and upload clear copies of the requested materials. Names, passport details, dates, host information and travel purpose should agree across the file.
- Respond to online review instructions. The reviewing authority or center may request corrections or additional material. For the current New Delhi process, wait until the application shows online review completed and the confirmation email has arrived before physical submission.
- Submit the passport and requested documents as instructed. Current New Delhi guidance lists the approval certificate, original passport and any conditional originals requested during online review. Other documents may also be requested. Check the instructions for your applicable center.
- Attend personally if required. An interview, biometric step or personal appearance can depend on category, circumstances and current official rules. New Delhi currently publishes specific interview instructions for S, Q and X categories, among others; verify the instruction that applies to your case. - Track and collect according to the official process. Keep the official receipt or collection document and follow the center instructions. A stated collection date is an estimate, not a guarantee of issuance.
Documents to prepare before starting
Common preparation
- Passport that satisfies the current validity and blank-page requirements.
- A recent photograph meeting the current specification. See the photo preparation guide and re-check the official rule when applying.
- Accurate identity, contact, travel and previous-travel information for the online form.
- Clear scans or copies in the format requested by the current portal.
- A consistent explanation of travel purpose, dates, funding, host and itinerary.
Category-specific supporting documents
- Tourism: travel-plan and financial or supporting evidence required under the current tourist instructions.
- Business: invitation and company or trip evidence that consistently explains the commercial activity.
- Study: admission and study documents required for the applicable X category.
- Family or private visit: host, invitation and relationship evidence appropriate to the applicable Q or S category.
Do not assume every item applies to every applicant. The portal, reviewing authority or submission center may request additional documents based on the case.
Does your location in India affect where the application is handled?
Yes, official consular jurisdiction can affect the application route. The latest Embassy jurisdiction notice located during this editorial review was updated in August 2024. It states that applicants residing in Maharashtra or Karnataka are processed through the Mumbai jurisdiction; applicants residing in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal are processed through Kolkata; applicants in other areas use the New Delhi or Embassy route.
Freshness note: the online procedure changed after that notice. Jurisdiction and submission routes can change, so verify the applicable center on the current official website before uploading or submitting documents. Do not choose a center simply because it appears geographically nearest.
If you live outside Delhi: assistance and official submission are different
China-Visa.in operates from its Delhi office and can begin an enquiry and document review remotely. You can first share clear scans through the agreed channel so apparent gaps, inconsistent details or missing supporting evidence can be identified before any physical dispatch.

If physical or original documents are actually required for assistance, tracked courier coordination may be possible using Blue Dart, DTDC or another suitable service. These companies are examples, not official partners. Confirm exactly what is required, package important documents securely, retain tracking details and confirm receipt. Courier is not necessary for every application.
This private assistance workflow does not replace the official visa procedure. If the Embassy, Consulate or applicable Visa Application Center requires passport submission, biometrics, an interview or personal appearance, follow that instruction. Errors that commonly delay document review
- Name, passport number or dates entered differently from the passport.
- Choosing a category that does not match the stated activity in China.
- Invitation, itinerary and application form describing different dates or purposes.
- Uploading unclear, cropped or incomplete supporting copies.
- Using a photograph that does not meet the current specification.
- Following an old checklist after the official process has changed.
- Sending a passport or another original before confirming that it is required and where it should go.

Questions applicants often ask
Can I start if I live outside Delhi?
Yes. Initial enquiry and document review can generally begin remotely. Official submission, interview or personal-appearance requirements still depend on the applicable category, jurisdiction and current process.
Should I send my original passport immediately?
No. First confirm what physical or original documents are required and the correct receiving instructions. The current New Delhi process asks for the original passport at the post-online-review submission stage, but follow the instruction issued for your own case and center.
Does my city decide which Visa Application Center I use?
Official jurisdiction, not simple distance, determines the route. Check the current official jurisdiction information for your residence and circumstances before applying.
Can personal appearance be required?
Yes. It may depend on the visa category, applicant circumstances and current official instructions. Do not rely on a blanket promise that every step can be completed remotely.
Can the document requirements change?
Yes. Requirements and procedures can be updated. Re-check the applicable official portal before submission, especially if an older checklist or previous application is being reused.
