Compare commercial travel, exchanges and work-related purpose questions before choosing a China visa category or obtaining an invitation.
M, F and Z are not interchangeable labels for every trip connected with an organisation. Start with the work or activity you will actually perform in China. A company invitation alone does not settle whether the visit is commercial, an exchange or employment.
The basic purpose distinction
| Category | Published broad purpose | Question to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| M | Commercial and trade activities. | What business activity or commercial relationship explains the visit? |
| F | Exchanges, visits, study tours and related activities. | What is the actual programme, and why is this the appropriate category? |
| Z | Work in China. | What employment/work-authorisation process applies to the proposed activity? |
These distinctions are drawn from the Chinese Embassy in India's category guidance. They are a starting point, not a private eligibility determination. Confirm borderline activities with the competent authority and the host or employer.
Describe activities before selecting a category
Ask the host for a factual description of the visit. “Business,” “training” or “technical visit” can be too vague on its own. Record what you will do, where, for whom, for how long and under which arrangement. State whether the visit involves meetings, an organised exchange, installation, service delivery or a role for an employer; do not change the description merely to fit a preferred visa label.
A short trip or payment from outside China does not, by itself, answer every work-authorisation question. If the activity might be work, resolve that issue before buying travel or treating an M invitation as sufficient.
Three preparation scenarios
- Supplier meetings: ask the inviter to describe the commercial relationship and planned meetings. Use the business-invitation guide to check consistency.
- Institutional exchange: obtain the programme and host explanation rather than calling it a supplier visit. Confirm whether the proposed category matches the actual activity.
- Taking up a job or performing work: ask the employer about the required official authorisation before assuming that a visitor category can cover it.
These scenarios show the questions to ask; they do not guarantee the category or outcome for an individual applicant.
Documents should follow the purpose decision
Do not begin by collecting whichever invitation is easiest to obtain. First identify the activity, then obtain evidence that accurately supports it. Where a host changes the programme, check whether the category and application details still fit. A corrected invitation must come from the appropriate issuer; a private reviewer should not rewrite official evidence.
The business application guide covers preparation once M is the appropriate route. A fair attendance question belongs with the exhibition service, but the label “exhibition” still does not excuse an inaccurate description of what you will do.
What help can Visa Expertz provide?
Our consultation service can help organise the purpose questions and review consistency in available documents. Official category acceptance, work permission and visa decisions remain with the relevant authorities. No new employment-visa service or work-authorisation guarantee is implied by this comparison.
