Current X1 and X2 study visa preparation guidance for Indian students, including admission documents, applicable study forms and submission checks.
The first student-visa decision is not which documents to photocopy; it is whether the study period and institution paperwork point to X1 or X2. Ask the admitting institution to confirm the programme duration, admission documents and the official study form issued for the applicant before completing the visa application.
X1 and X2 serve different study periods
- X1: long-term study for more than 180 days.
- X2: short-term study for no more than 180 days.
The course title alone does not determine the category. Use the duration and official institution documents. Current official guidance also states that an X1 holder must deal with the applicable residence-permit process after entry; students should confirm post-arrival instructions with their institution and the competent Chinese authority rather than treating the visa as the final administrative step.
Documents to confirm with the institution
If visa, admission and authentication instructions overlap, use the student document and attestation guide to identify which authority needs each record.
For X1, current India guidance lists the admission letter and the Visa Application for Study in China, commonly Form JW201 or JW202. For X2, the admission letter is central; the exact current supporting list should be checked for the center and applicant.
Before applying, ask the institution to confirm:
- the applicant's name and passport number on every issued document;
- programme name, study duration and expected arrival period;
- whether the admission notice is final and which original or copy format is issued;
- whether a JW201, JW202 or another current study document applies;
- what the student must do after arrival, particularly for long-term study.
If the institution corrects a passport number, name or date, make sure the corrected version is used throughout the application.
Prepare the applicant side of the file
Alongside the study evidence, applicants should prepare the common documents required by the applicable center: passport and relevant copies, online application information, a compliant photograph and previous Chinese passport or visa information where applicable. Non-Indian citizens applying in India may need evidence of lawful status in India.
Academic records, funding evidence, medical documents, police records or parental documentation should not be presented as universal requirements for every student. Include them when the current official checklist, institution or applicant circumstances genuinely require them. If an Indian document must be authenticated for a specific institutional or official purpose, first confirm the required chain; the document attestation service is relevant only after that need is established.
Complete the application without creating inconsistencies
The course duration, institution, Chinese address, funding and proposed travel dates should be consistent across the form and study documents. Do not guess an answer that the institution can verify. A different spelling or old passport number on an admission record should be corrected or formally explained before submission.

Online review, originals and personal appearance
Use the official online system for the center handling the application. Complete the form, upload the requested documents and wait for the current review instruction before presenting the passport or physical file. Online review completion is not visa approval.
Official guidance may require originals, supplementary documents, an interview, fingerprints or personal appearance depending on category and circumstances. X1 applicants in particular should not assume that a short-term exemption or another applicant's experience applies to them. Follow the instruction issued for the specific application.
Applicants outside Delhi can begin private document review remotely. If originals are later required for coordination, confirm exactly which documents and recipient are involved before using a tracked courier. This private assistance does not replace an official appearance or submission requirement.
