Understand document preparation, online review, passport submission and official processing time without treating a published service period as a guarantee.
“How long does a China visa take?” does not have one reliable number from the day an applicant starts collecting documents. The published service period applies to a specific part of the process. Document preparation, online review, corrections and the time before an accepted passport submission sit outside—or can extend beyond—that service period.
The timeline has separate stages
- Document preparation: collecting passport records, invitations, admission documents, travel evidence or applicant-specific material.
- Online application and review: completing the form, uploading materials and waiting for the current online instruction.
- Correction where required: changing inaccurate form information or supplying a clearer or missing document.
- Passport and document submission: presenting or sending the required physical material after the applicable instruction.
- Official processing: the service period after the center has accepted the required submission.
- Additional review: extra documents, an interview, personal appearance or case-specific administrative review where required.
- Collection or return: receiving the passport according to the selected and available return arrangement.
Not every applicant follows every branch, and time used in one stage should not be presented as time already spent in another.
What New Delhi currently publishes
As checked on 23 September 2026, the New Delhi Visa Application Center publishes the following service periods where all required documents have been provided:
- Regular service: usually six working days.
- Express service: usually four working days, subject to Embassy approval.
The official page expressly notes that some applications may require more time. Its contact page describes the corresponding collection days as expected, not guaranteed. These figures therefore should not be converted into a promise that every application will be completed on a particular date.
Other Indian centers or future notices may publish different arrangements. Always use the center and service applicable to the applicant rather than treating the New Delhi figure as a national guarantee.
Does online review count as official processing time?
Do not assume so. The online stage happens before formal passport/document submission under the current process. An applicant may be asked to amend information or upload supplementary material before moving forward. Online review completion is also not confirmation that a visa has been issued.

What can extend the overall timeline?
- Waiting for a genuine invitation, admission notice or other category evidence.
- Incorrect passport details, dates or purpose information that must be corrected.
- A photograph or uploaded document that does not meet the current requirement.
- A request for supplementary documents or clearer copies.
- An interview, fingerprint or personal-appearance instruction.
- Case-specific administrative or consular review.
- Weekends, public holidays, temporary center closures or altered submission/collection schedules.
- Courier transit or delayed collection after processing is complete.

When Should I Start Preparing?
Start when the trip purpose and essential supporting-document path are known—not when only a few working days remain before travel. A business traveller may need time for the Chinese inviter and Indian company to align their letters. A student may depend on admission and applicable study documents. A tourist may need a coherent itinerary and center-specific evidence.
Before choosing a start date, ask:
- Which visa category and Indian center apply?
- Are invitation, admission or relationship documents still pending?
- Is any correction, translation or authentication genuinely required?
- Are official holidays or closure notices near the proposed submission period?
- Would a request for additional material make the travel date unrealistic?
Use the current center calendar and instructions to plan backwards from travel, leaving a practical buffer for events outside your control. Do not purchase a non-refundable trip merely because a published service period appears to fit.
