Understand the difference between a China visa's entry window, permitted entries and length of each stay, and compare them with your actual travel plan.
“My visa is valid” does not answer every travel-planning question. An issued visa has an entry window, a permitted number of entries and a duration for each stay. Read those conditions together before comparing them with the trip you intend to make.
The Chinese Embassy in India's visa FAQ explains these separate terms and states that the issuing authority decides the conditions. Requested conditions may differ from those granted. This guide is about reading that decision, not predicting what a new applicant will receive.
Three questions, three different limits
| Condition | Question it answers | Common planning confusion |
|---|---|---|
| Validity / entry window | During what period can the visa be used to enter? | Assuming the whole validity period is permission to remain inside China. |
| Entries | How many permitted entries does the visa provide? | Assuming an unused date window automatically means another entry is available. |
| Duration of each stay | How long may the holder stay on an entry? | Assuming a return flight is acceptable simply because it is inside the visa's validity period. |
The Embassy explains that the stay calculation starts on the day following entry. Check the actual granted conditions and applicable official instructions; do not copy a friend's allowance into your itinerary.
Compare the issued conditions with the whole trip
Write down each intended entry into mainland China and the corresponding departure. Compare each planned entry date with the visa's entry window, account for entries already used, and check the duration of the relevant stay. Keep these as separate checks so that passing one does not hide a problem with another.
For a straightforward return journey, this may be a short exercise. For a journey that leaves mainland China and later returns, identify the later entry explicitly. If you are unsure how a route affects your entry permission, seek official clarification before relying on a booking. This article does not assess transit exemptions or alternative entry arrangements.
Examples of the distinction
Hypothetical example: unused time, used entry. A traveller has a single-entry visa, enters and then departs. A later date printed within the visa's validity window does not turn it into a second-entry permission. The traveller needs to resolve the later entry separately.
Hypothetical example: a longer date window than stay allowance. A traveller sees that the visa's entry window spans several months and plans to remain for that whole period. That plan overlooks the duration-of-stay condition. The permitted entry period and the allowed length of a visit answer different questions.
Hypothetical example: changed plans after issuance. A meeting moves and the traveller's revised entry date no longer fits the granted window. An organiser's revised invitation does not itself change the visa. The traveller should obtain official guidance about the document before proceeding.
These examples deliberately do not state standard numbers of days or promise that a category will receive particular entries. Use the conditions actually issued to you.
Check discrepancies before travelling
Compare the issued visa with the passport and intended trip as soon as you receive it. If a detail is unclear or appears incorrect, contact the issuing channel with the actual document and a specific explanation. Avoid making a handwritten correction or assuming a private adviser can change an official condition.
If your question concerns permission while already in China, obtain advice from the competent Chinese immigration authority. Do not use an application-preparation article as an extension or overstay calculation service.
Validity is not processing time
Processing time concerns waiting for an application outcome; validity concerns use of an issued visa. For the former, see the processing-time guide. For preparation before a holiday application, use the tourist visa guide; for the broader sequence, see the application guide.
Official information checked
When the passport is returned, use the passport-collection checklist to match the document to the applicant and raise any discrepancy before relying on the issued permission for travel.
Official definitions checked on 23 September 2026. Individual visa conditions and current official travel instructions remain decisive for the actual journey.
